Workshops

We are proud to have two free workshops presented by professional musicians who are also professional teachers. And we are very grateful to our generous sponsor of these workshops, The Shine Foundation.

Percussion Workshop: Acoustic Planet Studios, Sunday Aug. 15, 11am - 1pm, with Jose Sanchez.

The latin beat with it's lively syncopation is one of the most exciting forces in jazz. Jose Sanchez presents this workshop for all who want to get in the groove. Bring your percussion instrument if you can.

Jose Sanchez is a recognized Master Percussionist from Cuba. He began his studies in Percussion at Manuel Saumell School of Music from age 11 and graduated with honours as a Musician and Teacher from the "Amadeo Roldan Conservatory" in Havana. He has participated as a percussionist and a producer in many recordings in different part of the world. He has toured extensively through South America, North America and Europe with big Cuban names such as Adalberto Alvarez y su Son, Rojitas y su Orquesta, Amaury Perez and others. Jose moved to Vancouver in 1997, where he joined the music scene with Puentes Brothers, Juno award winner Alex Cuba and with Canadian pop singer Amanda Marshall. He makes his home now on Salt Spring Island. Don't miss hearing him Sunday Aug. 15th at Tree House Cafe where he leads his current band, "El Jose's Cuban Dance Party".

Bass Workshop: Acoustic Planet Studios, Sunday Aug. 15, 2 - 4pm, with Bob Delion.

"Get some creative juices flowing and explore some new ideas about playing your electric bass with Bob Pastorius. We will look at funk, jazz, R&B, blues and the various blends of these genres. We're gonna get down and get right back up again!"

"Bob Delion has been a professional bassist for over 30 years and a music instructor for the last 10 years at Acoustic Planet Music on beautiful Salt Spring Island. Since moving to the island in 1997 he has recorded and performed on stage with many of it's well known residents including Valdy, Randy Bachman, Bill Henderson and Harry Manx. He is a founding member of the island's premier jazz/funk ensemble Planet Music and a busy instructor/advisor/mentor for many aspiring musicians." Don't miss hearing Bob when he anchors Planet Music: at the Tree House Jazz festival opener on Friday the 13th, and also on Saturday the 14th at Mistaken Identity Vineyards.
